Repatriation from Egypt — the order of magnitude
From Egypt, repatriation is by air freight only, usually from Hurghada, Cairo or Sharm El-Sheikh. The figures below exclude additional services. We confirm the binding fixed price free of charge after a short conversation.

Transparency
What determines the price
For Egypt, three factors matter above all.
Cargo space and departure airport
There are regular connections to Europe from Hurghada and Cairo, but cargo space is not free on every flight. In high season that can cost a day or two. Onward journeys to the CIS countries usually involve a transfer.
Embalming and coffin
Export requires embalming and a hermetically soldered zinc liner. Both weigh considerably more heavily on the cost than for repatriations within Europe. Cremation is not possible in Egypt — see below.
Local permits
Export requires several clearances from Egyptian authorities. With a natural death this is routine. Where the cause of death is unexplained or an accident was involved, the release by the investigating authority is added and it takes longer.

Paperwork in Egypt
Medical certificate of death, Egyptian death certificate, export permit and the embalming and freedom-from-infection certificates. Where the cause of death is unexplained, the release by the investigating authority is added.
Preparation & air freight
Embalming, coffin with soldered zinc liner, booking of air freight from Hurghada, Cairo or Sharm El-Sheikh and issuing of the air waybill.
Arrival & funeral
We receive the deceased at the destination airport and take them to the place of burial, then arrange the subsequent registration of the death at home.

Good to know
What is specific to a death in Egypt
Statutory health insurance does not pay
Statutory health insurers generally do not cover repatriation costs, and the embassy bears none either. Without travel insurance the family carries them. Ask for a detailed, itemised quote before instructing anyone.
Not possible in Egypt
Cremation is not carried out in Egypt for religious reasons. If the family wishes an urn burial, we repatriate the deceased in a coffin and arrange the cremation at the destination.
German embassy in Cairo
It assists with formalities, translations, identification and securing the estate, and names local funeral directors, but bears no costs. Not every institute speaks German or English — we handle the communication.
