What determines the price
For Cyprus, three factors matter above all — in order of impact.
Destination and flight route
Cyprus is an island, so it is always air freight from Larnaca or Paphos. There are direct connections to Germany; to Central Asia or the Caucasus a transfer is usually involved. Route and freight tariff are the largest item.
Coffin or urn
Export in a coffin requires embalming and a hermetically soldered metal liner. That is heavy and takes cargo space. An urn is light and considerably cheaper — how urn repatriation abroad works is set out on a separate page.
Collection point and paperwork
Distances from the place of death to the airport are short in Cyprus. Time and money are lost rather where a post-mortem has been ordered or where the destination country requires apostilles and certified translations.

First contact & advice

Death certificate & export permit
The death is recorded by the district registrar and the District Administration issues the death certificate. To this are added the Ministry of Health export permit and the embalming and freedom-from-infection certificates.
Preparation & air freight
Embalming, coffin with soldered metal liner, booking of air freight from Larnaca or Paphos and issuing of the air waybill.
Arrival at the destination
In Germany we receive the deceased at the airport ourselves. Elsewhere we hand over to the partner funeral director, who accompanies the burial.

Repatriation from Cyprus generally requires the documents listed here. We obtain and check them for you, and establish in advance which ones the destination country requires with an apostille.

Good to know
What is specific to Cyprus
Air freight only
There is no overland option. Two airports handle customs clearance for repatriation: Larnaca and Paphos.
Embalming
For export in a coffin the deceased is embalmed and placed in a hermetically soldered metal liner. For a local burial the procedure is different.
Different authorities
In the north of the island, which is not under the administration of the Republic of Cyprus, different procedures and authorities apply. Tell us the exact location and we will establish the correct route before anything is arranged.
Crematorium
Not available in Cyprus
There is currently no crematorium in Cyprus, so cremation on the island is not possible. The first crematorium is planned in the Paphos area, but no binding opening date has been set. If the family wishes a cremation, we transfer the deceased to a country where it can be carried out and then bring the urn to its destination. We are following developments and will offer cremation in Cyprus as soon as it becomes possible.
