What does it cost?

Repatriation to Serbia — the order of magnitude

Serbia is outside the EU but well connected by road. In most cases we drive via Austria and Hungary, which is cheaper and allows the handover date to be planned more precisely than a flight.

The price depends on the collection point in Germany, the destination in Serbia and the paperwork and customs involved. Urn repatriation costs considerably less. Every item is itemised openly.

Services

What we take care of

From collection in Germany to handover at the cemetery in Serbia — one contact, one invoice.

Coffin & urn repatriation

By our own vehicle to every part of the country, or by air freight to Belgrade or Niš on request.

Consular approval

We obtain the approval of the Serbian consulate general in Germany — it is a precondition for entry.

Documents & translations

Death certificate in the international format, corpse passport, coffining certificate and certified translations.

Customs at the border

Serbia is not an EU country. We prepare customs clearance in advance so there is no delay at the border.

Liaison with the cemetery

We speak to the parish or cemetery administration and agree the handover date.

Support in your language

English, German, Serbian and Russian — around the clock, including public holidays.

Transparency

What determines the price

For Serbia, three factors matter above all.

Factor 1

Distance and mode of transport

The road route via Austria and Hungary is usually cheaper than a flight and allows the handover day to be agreed more precisely. A flight is worthwhile mainly for very distant collection points or where speed is critical.

Factor 2

Coffin or urn

Repatriation in a coffin requires a hermetically soldered zinc liner. An urn does not — see the page on urn repatriation abroad.

Factor 3

Documents and customs

As a non-EU country, Serbia requires consular approval and customs clearance. Completeness matters more than speed here — one missing paper and the vehicle waits at the border.

How we work

Guided step by step

From the first call to the burial in Serbia — no trips to authorities for you.

1

First contact & advice

Tell us where the deceased is and where in Serbia the burial will take place. We give you the fixed price and a realistic timeline.

2

German documents

Death certificate from the registry office, corpse passport from the competent authority at the place of death, plus the certificate of coffining with zinc liner.

3

Consular approval

With these documents we apply for entry approval at the Serbian consulate general and arrange certified translations.

4

Journey & handover

The drive via Austria and Hungary, customs clearance at the border and handover to the local funeral director or directly at the cemetery.

Documents

What is required

Repatriation to Serbia generally requires the documents listed here. We obtain them and file the applications.

  • German death certificate in the international multilingual format
  • corpse passport from the competent authority at the place of death
  • certificate of coffining and the soldered zinc liner
  • certificate of no objection from the public health office
  • approval of the Serbian consulate general

Good to know

What is specific to a repatriation to Serbia

Non-EU

Customs and consulate

Serbia is not part of the EU, so approval from the Serbian consulate and customs clearance at the border are required. We prepare both in full so there is no delay en route.

By road

Usually cheaper than flying

The route via Austria and Hungary is well developed. As a rule the drive costs less than air freight and the handover day can be fixed more precisely.

Faith

Serbian Orthodox tradition

The Serbian Orthodox Church takes a reserved view of cremation, so many families choose burial. Speak to the parish before deciding — we then plan the schedule around it.

Frequently asked questions

What families ask us most often

Do you drive to Serbia or fly?
In most cases we drive via Austria and Hungary. It is cheaper and the handover day can be fixed more precisely. Air freight to Belgrade or Niš is an option where speed is critical.
What does repatriation to Serbia cost?
By road the guide price is €2,500 to €4,500; by air freight €3,800 to €5,500. We confirm the binding fixed price free of charge within two hours.
Do I need approval from the Serbian consulate?
Yes. Serbia is not an EU country, so consular approval is required for entry. We apply for it together with the German documents.
How long does it take?
Once all documents are in place, the journey itself takes around one to two days. The time before that is determined by the death certificate, the corpse passport and consular approval.
Is a zinc-lined coffin mandatory?
For a deceased person, yes: a hermetically soldered zinc liner inside a wooden coffin. This does not apply to an urn.
Can you bring an urn to Serbia?
Yes, and it is simpler and cheaper. Bear in mind that the Serbian Orthodox Church takes a reserved view of cremation — discuss it within the family.
