Transparency
What determines the price
For a repatriation from Turkey, three factors matter above all.
Destination and flight route
There are frequent connections from Antalya and Istanbul, which keeps the freight tariff low. If the journey continues to Central Asia or the Caucasus, a transfer is usually involved.
Coffin or urn
Export in a coffin requires a soldered zinc liner. Turkey is a contracting state of the Berlin Agreement of 1937, so the technical requirements are the same as in Europe. Cremation is very unusual in Turkey — see below and the page on urn repatriation abroad.
Local formalities
Where the death was natural, matters usually move quickly. Time is lost where a post-mortem is ordered, where the death occurred far from a major city, or where certificates still need translation and certification.

Paperwork in Turkey
Medical certificate of death, Turkish death certificate and corpse passport. Where the cause of death is unexplained, the release by the investigating authority is added. The consulate assists with formalities and translations.
Preparation & air freight
Care of the deceased, coffin with soldered zinc liner, booking of air freight from Antalya, Istanbul, Izmir or Dalaman and issuing of the air waybill.
Arrival & funeral
We receive the deceased at the destination airport and take them to the place of burial, then arrange the subsequent registration of the death at home.

Good to know
What is specific to a death in Turkey
Statutory health insurance does not pay
Statutory health insurers generally do not cover repatriation costs, and embassies and consulates bear no costs either. Without travel insurance, the family carries them.
The Berlin Agreement applies
Turkey is a contracting state of the 1937 Berlin Agreement. The corpse passport is recognised and uniform technical requirements apply to the coffin, which makes the process predictable.
